STORMWATER DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT
Stormwater Design and Management
Approach
The key objective of Stormwater Design and Management is to control the runoff of stormwater on a site / sites such that erosion and other unwanted consequences are minimized.
The Local Authority of each municipal area typically has their own set of requirements regarding stormwater management.
A stormwater management report, including design and methodology, are required during the process of town establishment. Therein one must indicate the expected runoff volumes prior to development and after development for 1 in 5, 25 and 50-year return intervals.
Town establishment requires that the developer considers the construction of attenuation structures to satisfy the induced runoff volumes as required by the Local Authority. Singular erven have similar requirements, albeit to a lesser degree, to control the additional runoff induced by construction on site.
Although regulations state that neighboring erven must be able to accommodate the stormwater runoff, it remains unreasonable to assume that uncontrolled runoff is adequate, as this will merely cause the problem to accumulate.
